A Search for Hard-spectrum Gamma-ray Bursts Using Smm
We have searched over 9 years of data from the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) Gamma Ray Spectrometer for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with abnormally hard spectra which may have been missed in previous searches in the 0.35{0.8 MeV energy band. For this purpose, we searched the higher 0.8{10 MeV band. We have found only two new GRBs in this search, compared with 177 GRBs found in the 0.35{0.8 MeV band. ...
متن کاملA strict lower-limit EBL Applications on gamma-ray absorption
A strict lower limit flux for the extragalactic background light from ultraviolet to the far-infrared photon energies is presented. The spectral energy distribution is derived using an established EBL model based on galaxy formation. The model parameters are chosen to fit the lower limit data from number count observations in particular recent results by the SPITZER infrared space telescope. A ...
متن کاملInhomogeneity in cosmic ray sources as the origin of the electron spectrum and the PAMELA anomaly.
We show that inhomogeneity of cosmic ray (CR) sources, due to the concentration of supernova remnants (SNRs) towards the galactic spiral arms, can naturally explain the anomalous increase in the positron/electron ratio observed by PAMELA. We consistently recover the observed positron fraction between 1 and 100 GeV using SNRs as the sole source of CRs. The contribution of a few known nearby SNRs...
متن کاملTev Gamma - Ray Sources ?
In this paper, we identify Cen A and M87, two nearby Fanaroff-Riley I (FRI) radio galaxies, with high-energy-peaked BL Lac-like (HBL-like) objects by investigating their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The SED peak of Cen A at ∼150 keV, which was generally believed to be the peak of inverseCompton emission as in the case of 3C 273, is found to be actually the peak of synchrotron emission....
متن کاملExtragalactic Gamma-ray Sources
This chapter provides a review of γ-ray sources lying at high Galactic latitudes. Their statistical properties and variability status, as well as studies involving cross correlations with lower frequency catalogs and multiwavelength observations, are summarized. The case for active galactic nuclei is analyzed with special emphasis, since they represent the largest population of high energy sour...
